About
Your Trusted Eye Care Service
Who We Are
Lumina Eye Care Services is a specialist ophthalmology practice providing comprehensive, compassionate eye care for all ages. We combine clinical excellence with a patient-centred approach, ensuring accessible, high-quality care for everyone — from young children to elderly patients and underserved rural communities across Ghana.
Our Story
Lumina Eye Care was founded by a team of experienced ophthalmologists who shared a common conviction: that avoidable blindness — from glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, uncorrected refractive error, and childhood amblyopia — remains a preventable burden in sub-Saharan Africa. They established Lumina to combine specialist-level care with active community engagement and public health programming. The name “Lumina,” rooted in the Latin for light, reflects our purpose: to bring clarity and vision to every life we touch.
OUR MISSION
To work with our community and international partners to ensure equitable access to high quality eye care that overcomes geographic, social and economic barriers.
OUR VISION
To be a leader in the private eye care sector in Ghana and the West African sub-region.
Community Outreach Programme
Our outreach programme extends clinical services into the wider community, aligned with WHO targets for universal eye health, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being), and the global effort to reduce disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to preventable vision loss. All activities are conducted by qualified clinical staff using portable diagnostic equipment.
School Eye Screenings
We visit primary and secondary schools to screen children for refractive errors, amblyopia, strabismus, and colour vision deficiencies.
Children identified are provided with reports for parents and guided toward accessible, affordable treatment — contributing directly to SDG Target 4.a (inclusive learning environments).
Diabetic Retinopathy Screening
Partnering with existing diabetic clinics, we embed retinopathy screening into routine diabetes management. Services include fundus photography, severity grading, risk stratification, and patient education — reducing DALYs from preventable blindness by catching disease at treatable stages.
Community Glaucoma Screening
Glaucoma disproportionately affects people of African descent yet awareness remains low. We bring tonometry, optic disc assessment, and visual field testing to community gatherings — churches, festivals, markets, and health days — in line with WHO’s emphasis on integrated people-centred eye care. Those at risk are promptly referred for full diagnostic workup.
